Veterinary Assisting Studies

Course Description

This course provides foundation level education and training for those who wish to work or study in the area of animal care. Students study a variety of subjects such as Animal Welfare, Animal Anatomy and Physiology and Veterinary Assisting Skills. This course is an ideal foundation for those wishing to progress to third level, particularly in the field of veterinary nursing.

Entry Requirements

. Entry Requirements for On-Line Applicants:

  • Leaving Certificate, LCVP, LCA or a level 4 certificate
  • or have reached the age of 18. 
  • Mature student

If the criteria above does not apply, you may be called for an information interview to secure a place on the programme.


Work Experience

Work Experience is a core element of this programme providing an opportunity to put skills developed on the programme into use in a real working environment.  It also allows students to create links with employers. 

Career Opportunities

Successful students may gain employment in a wide range of settings including: Pet Shops, Grooming Parlours, Boarding Kennels, Animal Welfare Organisations, Stable Yards, Large & Small Animal Clinics, Catteries etc.  Some graduates are self-employed.  

Progression to Further Education and Higher Education 

This course meets the entry requirements for many Veterinary Nursing and Science courses at third level – please note, however, that this is dependent on student results and entry requirements may vary from year to year.  Graduates can also use the points scored through successful completion of this course to gain access to a very wide range of third level courses via the CAO system. 

Course Fees

All students are required to pay the €10 application fee and €150 registration fee. Both of these fees are non-refundable. Students are also required to pay the €200 Government Levy (exemptions with valid medical card or evidence that you qualify for Maintenance Grant/Back to Education Allowance). Additional course specific fees will apply. Details of course specific fees are available on request from college office or when you apply online.


Students who complete the course successfully qualify for:

  • QQI Level 5 certificate in Animal Care - 5M2768
