Emergency Care Services

Course Description

The overall aim of the programme is to provide the learner with the opportunity to develop the knowledge, skills and competence to work under supervision in a range of community health service settings or to progress to further and/or higher education and training. This course will assist those who plan to progress to education and training to work in either the Ambulance or Fire Service. Learners who successfully complete the course will gain essential knowledge and skills in areas relevant to these careers.

Entry Requirements

Entry Requirements for On-Line Applicants:

  • Leaving Certificate, LCVP, LCA or a level 4 certificate
  • or have reached the age of 18. 
  • Mature student

If the criteria above does not apply, you may be called for an information interview to secure a place on the programme

Work Experience

Work Experience is a core element of this programme providing an opportunity to put skills developed on the programme into use in a real working environment. It allows students to create links with potential employers while also learning from professionals in the natural work environment.

Career Opportunities

The State ambulance and fire services and private ambulance companies look for qualified staff to recruit. Opportunities also exist in Intermediate Care ambulances, and other industries, e.g. Airport response teams, pharmaceutical and chemical companies, oil refinery, Local On-call Services and direct employment as Emergency Medical Technicians.

Fire Safety and Emergency Response training will enhance employment opportunities in the broader labour market where such skills would be an invaluable asset, e.g. Caretakers, Safety Officers, Duty Managers etc.


Further qualifications can be accessed by the learners through the Pre Hospital Emergency Care Council (PHECC) structure or through on the job training. Higher Education opportunities may include:

  • Bsc. Paramedic Training with Emergency Services Training Institute (PPHECC Accredited)
  • Bsc. Paramedic University of Limerick
  • Paramedic Science in many UK Universities

Students who wish to use the links to further studies will need to attain a certain level of achievement in their QQI award.

Course Fees

All students are required to pay the €10 application fee and €150 registration fee. Both of these fees are non-refundable. Students are also required to pay the €200 Government Levy (exemptions with valid medical card or evidence that you qualify for Maintenance Grant/Back to Education Allowance). Additional course specific fees will apply. Details of course specific fees are available on request from college office or when you apply online.
