Journalism for the Digital Age

Course Description

This course is designed to introduce students to the extensive variety of practical techniques and theoretical knowledge that underpin the fundamental skills of a journalist. It will offer you an opportunity to learn modern skills in the areas of broadcast, print and online media. Most of the course is project based so you will work closely with each teacher in a variety of platforms from magazines/newspapers to broadcast and online media. The course provides students with new digital tools and practices and better ways to engage the public in a rapidly changing media world.

Entry Requirements

Entry Requirements for On-Line Applicants:

  • Leaving Certificate, LCVP, LCA or a level 4 certificate
  • or have reached the age of 18. 
  • Mature student

If the criteria above does not apply, you may be called for an information interview to secure a place on the programme. 

Work Experience

Work Experience is a core element of this programme providing an opportunity to put skills developed on the programme into use in a real working environment. It allows students to create links with employers.

Career Opportunities

Employment may be found in both print and online journalism. Points scored from this award can be used in lieu of the Leaving Cert to gain access to a wide variety of third level courses. Examples of possible progression include: Arts (UCC), Journalism and New Media (UL), Arts with Journalism (UCG), Arts (Mary I), Humanities (Carlow College) etc.

Course Fees

All students are required to pay the €10 application fee and €150 registration fee. Both of these fees are non-refundable. Students are also required to pay the €200 Government Levy (exemptions with valid medical card or evidence that you qualify for Maintenance Grant/Back to Education Allowance). Additional course specific fees will apply. Details of course specific fees are available on request from college office or when you apply online.
