Engineering Technology

Course Description

This is a one year programme which provides for students who wish to pursue careers in the engineering industry. This programme is ideally suited to candidates who wish to pursue an engineering degree at third level.

Course Content

Year 1

  • Engineering Workshop Processes: Aimed to equip the learner with the knowledge and skill to carry out a range of engineering processes competently and safely. 
  • Motor Vehicle Practice: Exploring practical applications to carry out a range of maintenance tasks associated with a motor vehicle.
  • Turning: Centre Lathe turning skills are developed and improved.
  • Communications: Skills are developed and improved for communicating and interviews.
  • CNC Programming: Using CNC Lathe, Moulding machine and laser cutters to aid production of artefacts.
  • Mechanics: Solving mechanical/theoretical problems related to engineering.
  • Mechanics: The study of materials and their properties.
  • Safety and Health at Work: Exploring safe working practices.
  • Computer Aided Draughting: Using computer graphics to develop design ideas.

QQI - Quality and Qualifications Ireland

Entry Requirements

Leaving Certificate, LCVP, LCA or a Level 4.  Mature students are very welcome.  Access to this programme will be decided by interview. 

Work Experience

Work Experience is a core element of this programme providing an opportunity to put skills developed on the programme into use in a real working environment.  It allows students to create links with employers. 

Career Opportunities

Metal fabrication, welding and other related engineering sectors.

Progression to Further Education and Higher Education 

Progress to QQI Level six Mechatronic Engineering at Kerry College of Further Education.

Graduates of this engineering course may progress to other higher level education institutes to study courses such as Mechanical, Structural, Civil, Electrical, Electronic and Computer Engineering.

Course Fees

Registration Fee €150. Government Levy €200.00 - Exemptions with valid medical card or evidence that you qualify for Maintenance Grant/Back to Education Allowance. Details of all other fees available on request from college office.

Certification

Students who complete the course successfully qualify for:

  • QQI Level 5 Certificate in Engineering Technology - 5M2061
