Furniture Making and Restoration (Level 6)

Course Description

This programme aims to:

  • develop in students the ability to fine tune their furniture making skills making them much more suitable to their own furniture making business, teacher training etc. 
  • familiarise students with the work environment of the building industry and prepare them for the world of work as furniture and cabinet makers. The Safe Pass legal requirement for the building industry will form an additional part of the programme.

Entry Requirements

Ideally applicants will hold a relevant level 5 qualification in Furniture Design and Making. However, those with other appropriate level 5 qualifications and applicants with relevant workplace experience will also be considered and called for an information interview.  

Work Experience

Work Experience is a core element of this programme providing an opportunity to put skills developed on the programme into use in a real working environment.  It allows students to create links with employers. 

Career Opportunities

Successful students may achieve apprenticeships in the following trades: Carpentry and joinery, furniture making, painting and decorating, furniture design, wood craft, metal craft, wood turning, surveying, draughting etc.

Progression to Further Education and Higher Education 
The programme is linked to third level institutes for students who wish to pursue higher education for example:

  • GMIT Letterfrack Furniture College
  • IT Tralee Advanced Woodwork and Sustainable Technology Degree TL743 

Course Fees

All students are required to pay the €10 application fee and €150 registration fee. Both of these fees are non-refundable. Students are also required to pay the €200 Government Levy (exemptions with valid medical card or evidence that you qualify for Maintenance Grant/Back to Education Allowance). Additional course specific fees will apply. Details of course specific fees are available on request from college office or when you apply online.


Students who complete the course successfully qualify for:

  • QQI Level 6 Advanced Certificate in Furniture Design & Making - 6M2230
