Advanced Supervision In Childcare (Level 6)

Course Description

This programme aims to meet the requirements of childcare supervisors and managers in relation to current childcare legislation and child protection legislation, as well as developing the skills and expertise required to work at managerial level. The programme aims to help learners:

  • Develop a clear understanding of the responsibilities and skills required.
  • Become aware of the needs of young children and be able to devise curriculum which aids the development of young children.
  • Develop interpersonal skills needed in dealing with parents and guardians, as well as statutory and non-statutory organisations.
  • Promote the care and education of children.
  • Understand clearly the social and legal issues in relation to the welfare of children.
  • Foster management and leadership skills.

Entry Requirements

Ideally applicants will hold a relevant level 5 qualification in Early Childhood Care Education. However, those with other appropriate level 5 qualifications and applicants with relevant workplace experience will also be considered and called for an information interview.  

Work Experience

Work experience forms and integral part of this KCFE programme. Students participate in quality placements allowing a valuable opportunity to gain hands on experience in industry.  Links made with employers during work experience often result in employment.

Supervisory and management roles in childcare settings.

Progression to Further Education and Higher Education 
Learners who achieve a full level 6 award may apply through the advanced entry route to second year of Early Childhood Care and Education (level 7 & 8) degree in IT Tralee. Learners can also progress to Early Childhood Studies in UCC and Early Childhood Care and Education degree in Mary Immaculate College Limerick. Learners may also access linked courses in universities and institutes of technology and may apply for CAO courses subject to individual course requirements.

Course Fees

All students are required to pay the €10 application fee and €150 registration fee. Both of these fees are non-refundable. Students are also required to pay the €200 Government Levy (exemptions with valid medical card or evidence that you qualify for Maintenance Grant/Back to Education Allowance). Additional course specific fees will apply. Details of course specific fees are available on request from college office or when you apply online.


Students who complete the course successfully qualify for:

  • QQI Level 6 Certificate in Early Childhood Care and Education - 6M2007
