Advanced Montessori and Childcare Management (Level 6)

Course Description

This programme aims to meet the requirements of childcare supervisors and managers in relation to current childcare legislation and child protection legislation, as well as developing the skills and expertise required to work at managerial level. The programme aims to help learners:

  • Develop a clear understanding of the responsibilities and skills required.
  • Become aware of the needs of young children and be able to devise curriculum which aids the development of young children.
  • Develop interpersonal skills needed in dealing with parents and guardians, as well as statutory and non-statutory organisations.
  • Promote the care and education of children.
  • Understand clearly the social and legal issues in relation to the welfare of children.
  • Foster management and leadership skills.

Completion of 120 Hours work placement is a mandatory component; Garda vetting a statutory requirement before commencement of work placement in Childcare/Montessori or school settings.

Entry Requirements

Ideally applicants will hold a relevant level 5 qualification in Early Childhood Care and Education. However, those with other appropriate level 5 qualifications and applicants with relevant workplace experience will also be considered and called for an information interview.  

Work Experience

You will leave KCFE with relevant work experience in your chosen industry. The work experience programme provides you with an invaluable opportunity to get hands on experience and a solid feel for your future career area.  

Career Opportunities

Level 6 is the minimum requirement to work in Childcare and Montessori settings as a room leader. Also qualifies learners to work in Childcare and Montessori settings as a Supervisor/Manager. There is a strong tradition of graduates of this course gaining employment as Special Needs Assistants in schools.


Eligible to apply for entry to CAO courses. In particular, this course provides a good platform for studying closely-related degree programmes, particularly Arts degrees and Early Childhood Care and Education degrees, which can then be used to apply for postgraduate teaching programmes. Also eligible to apply for advanced entry to year 2 of a limited number of Early Childhood Care and Education degrees.

Course Fees

All students are required to pay the €10 application fee and €150 registration fee. Both of these fees are non-refundable. Students are also required to pay the €200 Government Levy (exemptions with valid medical card or evidence that you qualify for Maintenance Grant/Back to Education Allowance). Additional course specific fees will apply. Details of course specific fees are available on request from college office or when you apply online.
