Secretarial Studies - Medical & Legal

Course Description

This medical/legal secretarial course offers a skill set which is highly sought after by employers.  There is a strong focus on developing the key computer and administrative skills necessary to be successful in any office setting.  Specific training on audio-typing/digital dictation forms a core element of the course in line with current medical and legal industry needs.

Entry Requirements

Entry Requirements for On-Line Applicants:

  • Leaving Certificate, LCVP, LCA or a level 4 certificate
  • or have reached the age of 18. 
  • Mature student

If the criteria above does not apply, you will be called for an information interview to secure a place on the programme. 

Work Experience

Work Experience is a core element of this programme providing an opportunity to put skills developed on the programme into use in a real working environment.  It allows students to create links with employers. 

Career Opportunities

  • Graduates may progress within KCFE to the Level 6 Advanced Certificate in Administration/Office Management.   
  • Those who complete their work experience in a dental reception area will have an advantage when applying for a place on the part-time Diploma in Dental Nursing in UCC. 
  • Alternatively, graduates may compete for places on a wide range of Higher Certificate and Honours Degrees in IT’s and Universities.

Graduates can work in any office setting.  Skills developed are very applicable to administration and receptionist roles in Medical Centres, Clinics, Hospitals (both private and public), GP Practices, Nursing Homes, Dental Reception areas, Special Care Facilities etc.  Graduates may find work in the legal field e.g. offices of solicitors/other legal practitioners.

Course Fees

All students are required to pay the €10 application fee and €150 registration fee. Both of these fees are non-refundable. Students are also required to pay the €200 Government Levy (exemptions with valid medical card or evidence that you qualify for Maintenance Grant/Back to Education Allowance). Additional course specific fees will apply. Details of course specific fees are available on request from college office or when you apply online.


Students who complete the course successfully qualify for:

  • A QQI Certificate in Office Administration - 5M1997
